 Lalich keen on State role

Lalich keen on State role

01 Oct, 2008 02:21 PM
Mayor Nick Lalich is keen not only to juggle his official activities of being Mayor and MP but also wants to pick up a portfolio or two if he's elected to state government.

After a walk through Cabramatta and attending the ballot draw on Friday, Mr Lalich said he was looking forward to the chance to represent local residents in more ways.

''I would definitely be hoping to be considered for a ministerial position, but that would be up to the Premier and caucus to decide if I get a spot in the cabinet,'' Mr Lalich said.

''Four years is a long time in politics, so I can't say at this stage whether I would run again for mayor or not.''

Mr Lalich said infrastructure (at present Fairfield MP Joe Tripodi's portfolio) and environment were high on his list of interests.

''We've spent a lot of time and money on cleaning up creeks and looking after the environment locally, so that's something I'm very interested in,'' Mr Lalich said.

''In the meantime, I'll be knocking on the door of every minister in government to secure wins for Cabramatta.''

Mr Lalich said that after working with the State Government on different issues, he intended to take up the fight on several fronts.

''We've always said parking in Cabramatta was a big issue, so we'll be continuing to work on that, as well as keeping an eye on the Bonnyrigg development and making sure that runs smoothly,'' Mr Lalich said.

''We've also got the biggest freight line in Australia being built through Cabramatta so we'll be looking at how to minimise the impacts of that. The $2million community fund is totally insufficient; I've always said that, so I'll be trying to get a better deal for residents.''

If elected, Mr Lalich will join former council colleague Ninos Khoshaba, who was elected Smithfield MP at the 2007 state election.
