Is the T-Way a ''crime hot spot''?

01 Jul, 2009 10:04 AM
HAVE YOUR SAY: The Champion has received reports from readers that the T-Way, which runs from Bonnyrigg to Smithfield, is a crime hot spot.

Do you know of any incidents? Tell us.

Fairfield police say the T-Way's Prairiewood station is a ``crime hot spot'' after a spate of crimes there by young people.

Inspector Gary Bailey, who's the region's crime manager, said there were lots of assaults and robberies there, especially on Thursday nights.

``It is definitely an area we are aware of and monitor regularly, particularly with groups of youths and antisocial behaviour on Thursday nights,'' Inspector Bailey said.

``We patrol the area heavily and target the bus stop, which also has CCTV vision.''

Since the T-Way station opened in 2003, it has become notorious as an area of antisocial activity by groups of young people.

Inspector Bailey said the problems stemmed from young people congregating in the area.

Joanna Cvetkoski, from the Parks Community Network, said there was a straightforward solution to the problem.

``We operate the Prairiewood Youth and Community Centre, which is down the road, and on Thursday nights we have the Youth Drop-In program, which is perfect for the youths who are looking for something to do,'' Ms Cvetkoski said.

``We purposely have a later closing time of 9pm and we have a range of activities they would enjoy, and I guess that is the goal to bring them into a safe and secure environment.

``At the moment, as a woman I wouldn't feel safe walking through there at night. Whenever you put a large group of unsupervised youths together, they are bound to get up to trouble without any proper rules.''

So much paper and ink is wasted nowdays about the Police. I remember my early days in real Australia. There was no crimes and our Police had an authority. What do we have it today? Anybody with a wet nose telling us what Police should, or should't do. At times you see some small police officers. In case of some trouble makers what can they do ??? Simple answer. Bring Police officers to 6 ft and issue with rubber truouchions ,plus a proper Authority that a policemen and women deserves. Feeding such animals is a crime.
