Hundreds rally as council approves genocide memorial - SEE THE VIDEO

16 Dec, 2009 12:48 PM
Hundreds of Assyrian and Turkish residents who had gathered outside the council offices were separated by dozens of police on Tuesday night while Fairfield Council approved the building of a genocide memorial in a Bonnyrigg park.

No objections were raised to the construction of the 4.5metre high statue and councillors voted unanimously for the construction of the monument to go ahead.

The proposal has divided the community, with many residents of Turkish background saying the issue had become ``personal''.

Turkan Ozturk, 36, joined the hundreds of Turkish supporters in the car park outside the council chambers who gathered before the meeting.

The mother of two from Hinchinbrook, who was with other family members, including her children, said it was the first time she had attended a council meeting or joined a rally.

``I feel so strongly about it,'' she said.

``I don't agree with what the Assyrians are saying about the genocide.

``If the monument goes ahead it will divide the community, and the community has always worked together and lived together.

``For years I have had Assyrian friends, but this sets up dividers.''

Deputy Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance, Hermiz Shahen, said he was pleased that ``despite strong objections by certain elements'' the application to erect the monument would now go ahead.

He said the construction of the memorial would begin soon, and was expected to be completed in May 2010.

``Every year, on August 7, Assyrians all over the world including our community in Fairfield gather to commemorate the Assyrian martyrs and genocide remembrance day to honour the memory of the victims of the Assyrian genocide,'' he said.

As the hundreds of Assyrians who gathered outside the council office to hear the council's decision cheered and chanted when the decision was announced, the Reverand Fred Nile appeared through the council doors.

Rev Nile said he had prepared a speech in support of the memorial to present to the council, but did not have to read it on the night.

He said he felt ``strongly'' about the need to recognise the genocide and he had supported similar calls by the Armenian population.

But he stressed that he hoped the Turkish community would understand that the recognition the Assyrian community was striving to achieve ``has nothing to do with the modern nation of Turkey''.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE COUNCIL'S DECISION?

The conditions

The council approved the construction of the Assyrian genocide memorial in a park in Bonnyrigg based on the following six conditions:

1. The Assyrian Universal Alliance is to be responsible for all costs associated with the statue, plaque and garden bed – including design, installation, site investigations and preparatory works.

2. The Alliance is also to be responsible for all costs associated with routine maintenance, graffiti removal, repairs (including vandalism) and renewal of the statue and plaque and all costs associated with weeding, cleaning, planting and landscaping of the garden bed.

3. The statue is to be located in the vicinity of the intersection of Elizabeth Drive and Smithfield Road. The total height of the monument will not exceed 4.5m.

4. The Alliance is to meet the cost of path paving within the park to support visitors to the statue.

5. While the Alliance proposes to hold a commemorative event associated with the statue as part of Remembrance Day on August 7 each year, a specific application for a local activity approval will need to be lodged with the Council for consideration.

6. The detailed design of the statue shall comply with Council’s “General Design Considerations for Proposed Artworks in Public Places” to ensure its safety.

Having attended the meeting last night I was left with admiration for all those people who put into place the environment that made for the council’s proper functioning. They did well. If the memorial raises our level of awareness, it will be a good thing. I believe that we are a nation that has the right heart, maturity and wisdom to accept the council’s decision. That is part of our greatness.

Well done to the Assyrians... Marching in a such a peacful manner, and although out-numbered, they proved their success through the peaceful Australian fairdinkum manner. This is a stepping platform for the recognition of the genocide committeed against them and their Armenian and Greek brothers .

So what now? The Chileans are going to demand a monument to the so called genocide in their country, the Argentinean will be demanding one too, and then its the Rwandans, the French, the English, the Italians, the Greeks, the Armenian's, the Catholics, the Muslims, the Tibetans, the Chinese, the south Vietnamese, the Laotians, the Cambodians...should I carry on???

Turks are trying to keep the peace. If they didnt then they would be requesting a monument for the many hundreds of thousands of deaths of TURKS by the armenians/assyrians. Why dont they look up the archives and find true and OBJECTIVE facts, the assyrians are being racist against the turks. The question is WHAT IS GENOCIDE and who determines which acts of war was/is classed as genocide?????????

How many council members do Fairfield City Coucil have?? Now how many are members of "the assyrian alliance"?? Now how many voted "for" the monument?? More than 50% are part of this alliance.... HOW could a "fair and just" decision be made when no other councillor objecting to the alliance members to vote on the proposal !!! This is a CONFLICT OF INTEREST!!! I thought i was born in AUSTRALIA where decisons are made by being objective in the !st instance.. PLEASE tell me that what happened last night at Fairfiled city Council chambers was 'OBJECTIVE'.. Very sad this is injustice.. I am a mother of 3 children and i am trying to teach and bring up my children to be fair and just... How is this done!

Hi Master, it's a valid point and memorials are built around the world for some of the causes you mentioned. Dont forget the Assyrians are a nation with no country - the native countries they inhabit they are persecuted to some degree ie Iraq because of their Christian affliation to USA, England & Australia (countries who were at war with Iraq) they are quickly victimised. Additionally they fought on the Allies side in WWI. When you do consider all facts and put the situation in perspective, yes i believe the Assyrians amongst others do deserve a small piece of land to erect a memorial commemorating their sacrifice. Australia champions human right causes around the world and is the best host and surrogate for plights of people that are under represented and with little voice on their own. Remember this is not the first or last community to have created memorials in Australia - It is only an issue i believe because Turkey has made it an issue.

I agree that this is a country that can give opportunities as well as refuge to those in need. I am of Italian heritage,my family migrating here in the 1940's and living in Wakeley for over 50 years. But across my whole family we understand this is not Italy.I am disappointed the council has bent to pressures from an ethnic 'alliance' that has managed to intertwine itself to the point they have 'turned' the heads of council to pass the building of this monument. Understanding what the monument represents, none the less,it impacted a % of the locals that actually live in Fairfield. Local clubs with ethnic affiliations were built by themselves, they purchased the land, started small and have references to their past within them to ensure the story of their journys are preserved for generations to come. Why do I,as a tax payer, need to pay for a monument that has no direct impact on me OR THE MASSES OF THIS COMMUNITY. Why not build another memorial for the ANZACS,as another reminder that if it wasnt for them,no Assyrian,no Turk,no Italian,NO RACE or RELIGION would have the FREEDOM to protest on council grounds? When applied to the masses, this has minimal relevance to society today...
