THE glass facade of Cabravale Leisure Centre became the Sistine Chapel on May 31 when artists from the Popperbox Collective led local youths in ``Glassbox'', a live art event.
Matthew Huynh of Popperbox said he was taken aback by the strong response from the crowd at the event.
``We had set up a lot of different spaces for different age groups, with bright and bold interactive art for younger people and spaces to sit back and socialise for older people,'' he said.
``But everyone came up to us and told us what a great event it was and that they'd never seen anything like it before, especially in their local area.
``At the moment there's a bit of a feeling that people who live here don't really go out in their local area, so we were trying to not only attract other people to Fairfield, but also bring locals out to their own area.''
Visitors to the centre used LED pens as ``magic wands'' to create trailing light patterns across the walls of the foyer.
Mayor Nick Lalich said the event was the first in a series planned in response to the Urban Art Strategy commissioned by Fairfield Council for Cabravale Leisure Centre.
All Popperbox artists are based in Canley Vale and Fairfield West.
Mr Huynh said he was holding discussions with local schools for future projects and two of the group's photographers were exhibiting work at the Chifley Tower in Sydney this weekend.
