Fairfield Mayor misses out on pay rise

02 Jun, 2009 02:54 PM
Fairfield Mayor Nick Lalich will miss out on a substantial pay rise that was anticipated by a number of mayors from several NSW councils.

Some mayors had asked for their pay be increased to $91,000 but have instead been given a 2.5 per cent remuneration increase.

The Local Government Remuneration Tribunal ruled that ratepayers could not afford major pay rises for councillors.

Fairfield was one of 11 councils pushing for the massive pay rises.

The maximum a mayor can be paid is currently $49,340.

A submission to the tribunal by Fairfield Council stated that "the nature of change for these councillors and mayor has been substantial with greater obligations imposed by legislation, compliance and reporting requirements, community expectations, increased reporting and other complexities attaching to the functions of council".

But the tribunal ruled that "the demands were not unique to local government but apply to all areas of responsibility in society and the workplace".

Fairfield council will vote on their own pay rises, within the set bracket, later this year.

This is the reason residents have such contempt for politicians. It is because some politicians treat hard-working residents with contempt. In the face of what his own Labor PM called the worst economic crisis in 75 years, with ordinary families being turfed out on to the street as their homes are repossessed, our out of touch, out of control, out of order Mayor wants a pay-rise. But it doesn’t stop there... no the grand mayor wants a grand pay rise to match his opulence. He wants $91,000 to do a part time job. And don’t let him tell you its not a part-time job because he already has one full-time job as the MP for Cabramatta. Mr Mayor you have been weighed, you have been measured and you have been found wanting!

I am pleased that the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal made the ruling that ratepayers could not afford major pay rises for councillors. At least they are aware of the reality of the the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) and the impact this has on the whole society. But to be informed that Fairfield City Council had pushed for this massive payrise for the Mayor, is beyond belief. How could they consider such a move in this hard economic time? Why does the Mayor want $91,000 for a part-time job, in addition to the full time job he has already as a State Member for Cabramatta. He wants to hold two full time positions? Is he really serious about this? Watching him performed under pressure at the May 26th Council meeting, have certainly raised some doubts as to his ability to manage both jobs: as Mayor and as State MP for Cabramatta. Being a part-time Mayor, and State MP he currently uses that power to suppress freedom of speech in our democratic society. What would increasing his renumeration say to the public? Really Nick, you have to look after your health. Having two full time jobs at your age will have a huge impact on your well being. Will the pressure of the two jobs eventully take its toll?

Nick. . . How dare you ask for a pay rise while you sit on your fairfield 'throne' as a dictator silencing the people who voted for you in the first place. Isnt it enough that you make $50,000 as a mayor and $200,000 as a member of parliament?

The dollar sign must be seriously diamond studded in the mind of our ambitious Mayor/Member of Parliament Mr Nick Lalich. He obviously can't get enough money, power, photographs, publicity and respect. One thing you should keep in mind Mr Lalich is that money can't buy brains nor the wisdom needed to carry oneself with the dignity and fortitude required of such a public position. You have betrayed the trust and the respect that was once afforded to you by the community. You have demonstrated the reality of your political intentions and ambitions. If anyone has political aspirations Mr Lalich, it certainly would be you.

thirst for equality is much better than hunger for greed Nick.
