 Fairfield Council's early Aussie Day

Fairfield Council's early Aussie Day

18 Nov, 2009 08:50 AM
FAIRFIELD'S Australia Day celebrations will be held a day earlier than the rest of the country.

Has the council's decision to make Australia Day one day earlier changed your plans for January 26?

Fairfield Mayor Nick Lalich has confirmed the official Australia Day festivities will be held on Monday, January 25, ``including a citizenship ceremony and presentation of community awards''.

``Details of any other activities will be made available when finalised,'' he said.

The council's Australia Day festivities have previously been held at Fairfield City Farm, which is currently being sold off.

Fairfield Young Citizen of the Year for 2009 Tania Huynh said she was surprised the council was holding the celebrations one day before everybody else.

``This is the first I've heard of it and I can't say I understand why they're doing it this way,'' she said. ``It's definitely different.''

Ms Huynh, who will be handing on her award to next year's recipient, said holding the presentation a day early would make it more difficult.

``I'm lucky because I'm still on holidays but there will be lots of people that still have to work,'' she said. ``It's a bit of shame because it will make it harder for the community to get involved.''

Mayor Nick Lalich said discussions to change the council's official Australia Day ceremony have been held over the past few years.

``One of the drivers of these discussions were the number of complaints received surrounding the warm and often uncomfortable weather conditions as a result of the outdoor location,'' he said.

I suggest that Fairfield City residents who want some entertainment and are disappointed with Council's lack of events activities go to Parramatta Park on Australia Day. At least Parramatta City Council do give a toss and have organised hot air ballons, night concert, kids activities and rides at Parramatta Park. Nick -yes it is hot on Australia Day, that's why when your staff organises an event request shade structures and then you can hold the event. Your explanation sounds a bit like an excuse, as the closing of the farm meant you got no suitable venue.

Excuses, Excuses, surely we must be able to use another venue. This is appalling, that this council wants us to celebrate this on the wrong day. What else is next? You've got it all wrong Mr Lalich. Just suit yourself as usual no consideration for others.....
