Dutton Lane: To develop or not?

02 Oct, 2009 03:08 PM
A rumour circulating that Fairfield Council is considering the redevelopment of Dutton Lane has not been denied by the council.

A statement from the council states that they are "continuing to consider options for the future development of the Cabramatta town centre".

Although there was no admission that development would take place, they also stated that "there has been no decision taken regarding the sale of Dutton Lane".

Mayor Nick Lalich then said: "I am keen to see the Cabramatta Town Centre improved but I will not support the sale of any Council-owned land within the Dutton Lane precinct."

What do you think the council is going to do with the land? Tell us below.

Is this why they didn't use the federal stimulus money to build a bigger car park in Dutton Lane?

Is this kite flying? Fairfield Council has struggled with this issue since the 1980s. Several schemes have been considered since the multi-story car park was built more than 20 years ago, ranging from commercial, retail and residential development, additional parking and significant community facilities. The State Government was a stumbling block that the council did not surmount. That this phenomenon has resurfaced in the year 2009 is an indictment and demonstrates the council’s incapacity to resolve matters of importance to ordinary people. The long festering inadequacy of car parking is another prime example. A councillor recently reportedly said that a factor in the decision to build the Fisher Street car park was council’s ownership of that land. This suggests that the Dutton Lane land might not belong to the council. Who owns the land? If council owns the land why did the councillor say that? The mayor is also the State Member for the area. He has also been on the council during this protracted period. He and the council need to sit down and work the situation through with all the stakeholders and especially the State Government of which he is part.
