Bring back the kingdom's magic in Lansvale

01 Jul, 2009 09:59 AM
Could the old Magic Kingdom site be haunted, or maybe it's just the "magic" that lives on in the deserted park?

The Hollywood Drive site was deserted about 15 years ago except for the giant yellow slide and the big boot that were children's favourites during the park's heyday in 1980s.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MAGIC KINGDOM COME BACK?

The amusement business took a beating in the 1990s, and a succession of popular fun parks closed down around Sydney including Wonderland in 2004.

But the idea of a local theme park hasn't left the mind of Prestons-based businesswoman Julianne Cusumano and her amusements company JVPlay.

"It would be great to see Magic Kingdom come back to life," she said.

"We have a few projects in the works at the moment that we would love to see take shape in south-west Sydney."

Fairfield Council is also behind the idea with Mayor Nick Lalich saying the council would happily support an amusement park in the area.

"The council welcomes any leisure and recreational projects to the area that will enhance tourism and economic development opportunities, as well as increase the range of facilities available to residents," he said.

Whitlam Library's local history librarian Marilyn Gallo said she remembers the theme park well.

"I remember the picnic grounds, the waterslides and the pond. It was always a really good family day out," she said.

Mrs Gallo said a new amusement park in the Fairfield area would be great for families and local businesses.

"We don't have anything like Magic Kingdom around here for the kids anymore," she said.

"A theme park that was inexpensive and close to home would be ideal for this area."

The Magic Kingdom site has been for sale for a number of years and has even been to auction but Gavin Bishop from Colliers International said the site has failed to sell "due to a lack of interest".

Former Magic Kingdom employee John Lyons said it hosted more than 1000 guests every weekend during the summer months, but the site was flood-prone and the business had been unsustainable during winter.

"It was great fun working there and I really enjoyed it but winter time was really bad for business," he said.

DO YOU HAVE PHOTOS OF MAGIC KINGDOM - WE'D LOVE TO SEE THEM AND PUBLISH THEM ON THE WEBSITE.

I think it would be a great idea if any amusement parks could be created once again. When Wonderland closed down I was very disappointed as I would go there and I would have a good time. Since we don't have much amusement parks over the western side anything exciting would be an advantage to the area. I'm sure the communities surrounding Magic Kindom we would all benefit for a fun time. I would strongly recommend a big park full of lots of fun for everyone.

Bring back the Kingdom! As a mother of 4 from ages 8 to 13 I find it extremely difficult to take the kids anywhere in the Fairfield area without having to go to Sydney for Luna Park for which you can get everything over and done with in 1 hour there. These suburbs need somthing for kids of all ages that is also fun for the parents, places like Hocus Pocus and such just dont cut it.

I think an amusement park in Sydney other then Luna park would be a great idea. Because there is nothing for families out in the west to do with their kids other then the play centres which are for todder ages not for children of all ages and parents.

Well apparently the place is haunted. There are many witness accounts to the mystery. My cousin and his friends also went there once and my friend was with them. She told me she saw a white ghost figure opposite the big slide. Offcourse they all then ran away. They also mentioned an old lady who lives in a house just outside the park and that shes abit scary too.

Sorry to say this, but the place's haunted. As it said that the Ghost Train catched on fire in 1979 and 7 people die. Some of my freinds told me that if you visit the kingdom at day or night, you might hear strange noises or you might see a white figuire near the big slide. I guess the 7 people died in the Ghost train are still there. So, i won't support the idea of restructing or opening the kingdom. Mind you, what could happen if we do open it again?.

The Champion’s article has inspired this citizen who passed through the Kingdom in its glory to undertake a search for those who might possess any photographs. Remarkably, all but two of those I have approached also journeyed through the Kingdom, but like me took no pictures. I have it on very good authority that the haunting can be overcome and it has all to do with magic. I also have it on good authority that the magic lays within the uncrowned King or Queen who is amongst, but unbeknown to us and who can make photographs of the living Kingdom appear. Hearken, go forth all ye one and all and find the one that has the power, for surely he or she is still among us. In the meantime, should someone tap you on the shoulder and ask, “Did you go to the Kingdom and did you take any pics?” do not be afraid, for it may be this citizen who will continue the quest. In the doing, I will bring with me good intent as a sign and reminder that this was part of the Kingdom’s magic.

I seem to recall as a kid, the place being "Hollywood" prior to the Magic Kingdom, and run by gypsy types. As nice as it would be to have a return of the Magic Kingdom, the area is flood prone, has poor access, and I'm sure there would be complaints regarding traffic, noise and parking. Public liability insurance would also be a killer. There has been a trend away from this type of amusment. Even Luna Park is a shadow of its' former self. Most similar ventures have vanished. Despite all my negativity, the idea has some merit and is worth looking at. I'm sure a little belief and magic could conjure up something worthwhile.

I would definitely love to see a little magic brought back to Fairfield... I think the problem these days is kids get their amusement from video games and not amusement parks.
