Assyrian monument to be unveiled

22 Jun, 2010 12:00 AM
THE Assyrian Universal Alliance has announced that the Assyrian Genocide Monument will be unveiled on August 7.

The date holds a special significance because it is observed by the Assyrian population around the world as Assyrian Martyrs Day, although no official recognition has been granted by government in Australia.

Deputy secretary-general Hermiz Shahen said the unveiling would coincide with ``honouring the memory of the victims of the Assyrian genocide committed by the Ottoman government during World War I''.

Mr Shahen said the foundation work and the 1.2-metre high base were completed last week.

He said the Assyrian Universal Alliance had organised a two-day program to unveil the monument.

``The unveiling will commence at 11am at Bonnyrigg Park followed by a seminar on the Assyrian genocide,'' Mr Shahen said. ``A documentary will be screened at the Assyrian Social Centre that shows the horror of genocide. The Assyrian Universal Alliance is extending an open invitation to all Assyrians around the globe to attend this important memorial ceremony to share this historic moment with us.''

The Turkish community have continued to oppose the monument and recently held a protest at Fairfield Council chambers.

The NSW Turkish Businessmen's Association plans to hold another rally soon.

They want to build a monument about something that happened 100s of years ago, words that your great great great grandparents told their kids: Dont you guys have anything better to do then waste our tax payers money.? Instead, the government should fix the roads, give the money to public schools. HOW PATHETIC!!

A Genocide Monument is NOT useless as it raises awareness of the Horrors of Genocide & that it should be stopped Worldwide. Maybe Concerned_ Local is spreading hate and tearing the Community apart !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

Well lucky there will be CCTV setup at the site and if the Turks do burn it down then I guess that they just confirm they are foolish criminals. We are more than happy to debate them on the issue if they think the genocide is false.

To concerned_Local, if the Turks believe the genocide didn't happen then why are they so afraid of public exposure on the issue?, why would they wish to destroy a monument if they are peaceful law abiding citizens, the monument was built legally and approved by Fairfield council, Turks destroying it would be illegal and a form of public vandalism, are you promoting such acts, that doesn't sound too Australian to me. You have no Idea what it means to be Australian, if you had any slight basic education or even some sort of basic logic you would know Assyrians fought side by side with the ANZACS and we also march on ANZAC day with the diggers, this monument is more Australian than your beloved Turks, who i might add most of the reside in Auburn, only a handful of them are actually in Fairfield.

If you knew anything about modern or ancient history you'd realise there was more to this story than meets the eye - what do you plan on telling the Armenians that were victims to the same Genocide (over 2 million)? the Greeks (half million)? are you the sort of person that asserts the Holocaust never happened? if the turks destroy public property, then they should be subject to the full force of the law - why would a bit of concrete vex them so if they weren't guilty? every last one of them soaked to the bone with innocent women and children's blood. You might love the ottoman empire, ... Those of us that remember the reality and its atrocities don't.

Assyrian community should be focusing on other things rather than CCTV footage, Monuments and raising awareness. how about getting the hundreds of Assyrian kids a proper tertiary education instead by setting up a scholarship of some sought. If the AUA was after a publicity stunt and attracting attention then they've done their job. just not sure what benefit the Assyrian community as whole (not just in ffld) will see in 20 years to come when the kids dont get married to other assyrians.

This Monument is fully funded by the Assyrian Universal alliance with the Assyrian Community for the people who dont understand, Taxpayers are NOT spending a cent !!!!!!!!!!!! If the Turks have nothing to hide why are they Protesting for ??? Their name is not Mentioned anyway unless the Turks actually committed these Crimes and want to hide their shame through Denial !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well done AUA and the Assyrian Community for all your hard work and dedication for this cause this since 1995.
